Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus)

Origin: Arabian Peninsula
Sighted at: PetSmart @ Austin, TX

Wow, it’s been a while! My dog’s been recuperating from surgery, so I haven’t had much opportunity to wander off the beaten path when it comes to animal watching. There’s been some cool looking slugs out, thanks to an unexpectedly rainy week here in Austin, but my last couple of entries have been invertebrate focused already…

I knew the streak was broken when I spotted this cool guy at the pet store. He was unexpectedly sociable – he climbed down from his branch and crept over to me to see what I was up to! Not only can this kind of chameleon move his eyes independently of one another, but he also has weird split feet designed for grabbing branches, unlike any other animal I can think of. Yay evolution!
