Sudan Plated Lizard (Gerrhosaurus major)

Origin: Northern Africa
Sighted at: Texas Snake Farm, New Braunfels, Texas

I took a spontaneous trip to a snake farm that I’d heard about in New Braunfels today, and I discovered not only an incredible variety of snakes and reptiles, but an amazing zoo as well! I’ll be sharing a bunch of pictures from the entire place.

This little fellow is a plated lizard, and it was living in a tank with about a dozen or so bearded dragons. If you’re in the market for an exotic lizard for a pet, the plated lizard is a good one: it’s known for having a benign attitude to living in captivity. This particular one seemed to get along very well with its neighbors, although the entire tank became something of a free-for-all when they realized that I had grubs to feed them with. Each reptile was more than happy to climb all over his neighbors to get at the delicious, squirming bugs in my hands. It seemed a little like a zombie movie being played out right in front of me: things are fine, and everyone get along, and then SUDDENLY it’s the apocalypse! Survival is threatened! Supplies are scarce! It’s every lizard for themselves! Really makes you think.
