Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans)

Origin: South United States & northern Mexico
Sighted at: My parents’ home in Key West, FL

This is one of the many, many different turtles kept at my parents’ home. Its neighbor, the spur-thigh tortoise, was one of the first animals I posted to the blog! I just recorded a poorly made video of feeding the big tortoises that features this red-ear in the later minutes! Check it out here!

The red-eared slider is the most popular pet turtle in the United States. It spends most of its life in the water, although you’ll often see wild ones basking on logs. They have sharp claws.
