Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus)

Origin: Southeastern United States

Sighted at: Anastasia State Park, St Augustine, FL

While visiting St Augustine, my father and I went to the nearby state park on Anastasia Island! This park is known for its seaside view, its plentiful mosquitos, but most wonderfully, its abundance of gopher tortoises!

Gophers are a threatened species, so while you’ll find them all over Florida, you’re not to mess with them or relocate them!

Like sulcatas, gopher tortoises are burrowers! They spend most of their time napping in their burrows!
