Red Lechwe (Kobus leche leche)
Origin: Central and South Africa
Sighted at: Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, San Antonio, TX
I had to learn a lot of weird deer and antelope names in my hunt to figure out what this one was called, and “lechwe” takes the cake. I don’t even know how to pronounce it! There’s apparently five different kinds!
One thing that fascinates me about a lot of these African animals is that many of them come from south of the equator – from areas of the globe that have climates similar to that of Texas, but on the entire opposite side of Latitude zero!
