Indian Hog Deer (Hyelaphus porcinus)

Origin: Southeast Asia
Sighted at: Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary, Austin, TX

I’ve moved my animal photography, previously under the “Everyday Zoology” masthead, to my own personal blogsiteforumdomainumblr. Welcome!

Hog deer are deer, and not hogs. They’re called hog deer because they move like hogs – low to the ground, ducking under things – rather than racing and leaping like their ruminant relatives. Hog deer are quite small: this specimen was only about two or three feet tall.
