Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor)

Origin: North America, now found in Europe, Japan, and the Caucasus

Sighted at: Pedernales Falls State Park, Johnson City, TX

Here’s a little fella everyone knows and loves! I found this cute scoundrel grabbing a secret mid-afternoon snack!

The word that became “raccoon” was originally a Powhatan term used by the original peoples of Virgina, meaning “one who uses their hands,” referring to coons’ dexterous little grabbers!
