Addax (Addax nasomaculatus)
Origin: Saharan Desert, Africa
Sighted at: Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, San Antonio, TX
This was another antelope whose name was hard to track down… much to my chagrin, it’s sometimes simply called the “white antelope.” Some names really are pretty straightforward, I guess. I prefer its more formal name – the addax! It doesn’t seem to be clear to anyone where the name “addax” actually came from, though. It might be Arabic or Latin in origin.
The addax is endangered, which I think makes it the first threatened species to appear on the blog! So… way to go, addax! Way to shoulder the burden that fate has given you.
