Paper Wasp (Polistes exclamans)

Origin: Warm & temperate regions of North America
Sighted at: Castle Black, Austin, TX

A wasp! Unlike hornets and yellowjackets, the paper wasp – a common species with dozens and dozens of subspecies across the world – is a relatively tranquil, nonaggressive bug that will only attack humans and other animals that pose an immediate threat to their papier-mâché nests. This particular subspecies, exclamans, is noteworthy for its rust-red coloration.
