Sanke Koi (Cyprinus carpio)

Origin: Japan
Sighted at: Japanese Tea Garden, San Antonio, TX

Last weekend, I rode along with the Returners on another trip – this time to a Japanese appreciation festival in San Antonio – a city which, much to my surprise, has a very lovely Japanese garden-style park! There’s a tremendous pavilion, a waterfall, a flower garden, and – of course – a koi pond!

Koi, which are a type of carp, come in many varieties. This three-colored version – white and red with black splotches – is known as the “Sanke.” You can read more on the different varieties of koi at this wonderful site dedicated to them!
