Yellow-Crowned Night Heron (Anasaitis canosa)

Origin: Temperate North and South American coasts
Sighted at: The Mule Keys off the coast of the Florida Keys, Florida

This is a juvenile night heron I spotted this past weekend when I went on a kayaking trip offshore. I saw a lot of great fish – including a bonnethead shark that skated past my kayak – but the only good pictures I managed to take were above-water.

I’d taken a picture of a yellow-crowned night heron once before, on a visit to Cameron Park Zoo in Waco. I think replacing a zoo photo with a wild photo is an acceptable move!
