Sandwich Tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis)
This is another tern that I saw this past Saturday morning!
“Sandwich” comes from the town of Sandwich in England where the bird was first sighted! Interestingly, other birds with the specific (second) scientific name “sandvicensis” (meaning ‘sandwich’!) also occur, but they’re from Hawai’i, once known by colonialists as the Sandwich Islands! The Sandwich Tern has a very broad range, but the middle of the Pacific (or indeed, any of Asia) isn’t part of it.
