Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug)
Origin: Eastern Europe and Asia
Sighted at: Baker Sanctuary, Leander, TX
My pal Rachel and I went to the open house at the Baker Sanctuary by the local Audubon Society! We didn’t see a ton of local birds on our hike through the woods, but our favorite falconry exhibitors, Sky Kings, were there for a raptor presentation! They had a vulture, an enormous owl, and a couple of falcons, including this majestic bird from the Middle East. The name, “saker,” is based on the Arabic صقر, pronounced “saqr,” meaning ‘falcon’!
