Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis)
I have been trying to snap a photo – even a bad one – of a cardinal for literally a year! These red birds (the males, anyway – the females are less bright, with grey feathers as well) are not an uncommon sight in the neighborhood, but they’re even more skittish than your usual feathered friend. Usually, as soon as I see one, it spots me, and then it’s gone.
It was a great joy to see one out my window on this lazy, rainy morning, pecking around in the front yard. I quickly and quietly put on my shoes, grabbed my camera, made sure it had a card and some power, and crept through the backyard to the fence so that I could grab a couple of shots without it noticing me. Mission accomplished!
