Herring Gull (Larus argentatus smithsonianus)

Origin: North America
Sighted at: White Street Pier, Key West, FL

You can’t tell from this photo, but the herring gull is quite big – big compared to other gulls, anyway. It’s quite large, and quite willing to use its bulk to its advantage, shoving other birds completely out of the way in an effort to nab food. Herring gulls in particular are known for being a bit of a nuisance in this regard: it’s not uncommon to see them stealing food from picnic tables or people’s hands.
