Great White Heron (Ardea herodias occidentalis)

Origin: Caribbean and South Florida
Sighted at: Mallory Square, Key West, FL

Commonly confused with the black-legged Great Egret, the Great White Heron is a subspecies of the Great Blue Heron, an enormous dusky-colored wading bird native to the Americas. The white version can only be found in the subtropics and tropics of the Keys and the Caribbean!

This particular subject was a big bully! He scared off a great many seagulls, skimmers, and pelicans, just to prove that he could. You can see one little seagull at his feet in this shot – I bet he was in on it the whole time.
