Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus)

Origin: North America
Sighted at: Castle Black, Austin, TX

The grackle! An Austin staple!

The Great-tailed (or “Mexican”) grackle is one of three grackles common to the United States. Grackles are a type of “blackbird,” although the females (like the one pictured here) are actually brown in color.

Grackles are found in tremendous numbers in Austin. I’m convinced that they actually rule the city. They can be found literally everywhere, foraging for food and singing loudly.
