Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
JUNE 14: My company took us out on Lake Travis, and I had the opportunity to catch a much MUCH better shot of these big ol’ birds at the island that our boat parked at!
MARCH 31st: Hey! It’s the Texas cousin of the Great White Heron I saw a couple months back! Yay for continuity! I first spotted these guys at McKinney Falls State Park.
These great dark birds are amazing not merely for their size, but for how high up their nests are! These guys were perched a good fifty or sixty feet in the trees that tower over Onion Creek. They would occasionally take great swoops across the river – presumably looking for fish and frogs to eat.
