Black-Chinned Hummingbird (Ardea herodias)

Origin: Western United States and Mexico
Sighted at: Lake Travis, Austin, TX

Another treat from the Lake Travis trip – my first wild hummingbird! Despite the name, this hummingbird’s chin and throat are clearly not dark: its green and white plumage mark it as a female. In fact, there was a small nest right near this mother bird that I didn’t even notice until I was looking through the photos when I got back!
