Abyssinian Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus abyssinicus)

Origin: Northeast Africa
Sighted at: Fort Worth Zoo, Fort Worth, TX

Any animal with “abyss” in their name is A-OK with me. So long as it’s suitably terrifying. This hornbill is both intimidating and alluring – it even has modified feathers that look like long eyelashes.

The Abyssinian Ground Hornbill eats a wide variety of animals and plants with its powerful beak – even turtles!

This is our first picture to feature a cameo from another animal! The deer is a lesser kudu, which shares its pen with the hornbills at the zoo. We’ll see more of the kudu… tomorrow!
